Gas douches.-In order to obtain local anµsthesia, more particularlv for use in dental work, a jet of oxygen and compressed air is first heated and applied to the part to be anµsthetised and afterwards gradually cooled down to 0‹ C. The cooled jet is kept playing on the part during the operation and then it is slowly again raised to 37.5‹ C. or even 40‹ C. Compressed air is contained in the bottle A and oxygen in the bottle B. These deliver into the expansion chamber D and thence by the cock S to the chamber E. The lamp L serves to heat the jet which passes the thermometer N on its way to the nozzle H carried by adjustable bends controlled by screws Z. The heated jet cools down to about 20‹ C. owing to the draught produced by the pressure. The lamp is then turned off and cooled air at -40‹ C. is admitted from the bottle C to a reservoir projecting into the chamber E, thereby cooling it, the escaping vapour from this reservoir further cools the mixed jet. When the jet is reduced to 0‹ C., the compressed air is shut off, and the operation performed under a jet of cooled oxygen alone.
