Abstract

Acetyl-benzoyl peroxide is prepared by treating with an oxygen-containing gas a mixture of acetic anhydride and benzaldehyde in presence of dibenzoyl peroxide. Preferably, the acetic anhydride is in excess such as 1.5--2.8 molecules of anhydride to one of benzaldehyde. In an example, the reaction mixture containing a small quantity of dibenzoyl peroxide, is placed in a glass or aluminium tube so as to form a column of liquid, and air or oxygen is admitted through a ceramic diffuser. The temperature should not exceed 40 DEG C. Preferably an aluminium tube is employed for the reaction, and is provided with a water-jacket for controlling the temperature. On cooling the reaction mixture, the acetyl - benzoyl peroxide crystallizes out. Specification 397,364 is referred to.
