Abstract

154,022. Crompton & Co., and Jones, W. F. Sept. 19, 1919. Switches, quick-action.-In a switch in which the switch handle spindle carries integrally an auxiliary lever operated through a spring by a handle loosely mounted on the spindle, the movements of the lever are controlled by one or more spring-controlled detents mounted on the switch box, each detent having an eccentric cam-surface over which a pin on the handle rides towards the end of its traverse, thus allowing the spring to turn the lever and spindle to close or open the switch. The parts are shown in the " off " and " on " positions in Figs. 1 and 2 respectively. The handle E, loose on the switch spindle B, carries a pin F engaging the spring D which is also engaged by a pin C on the auxiliary lever A, shown in Fig. 4, the spring ends being crossed so that the spring is wound up by movement of the handle in either direction. The spring-controlled detent G, pivoted on the casing at M, holds the lever in the " off " position while the handle is moved until its tail 0 is depressed by a pin N on the handle, whereupon the lever springs over and closes the switch. Complete closure is ensured by the engagement on a lug U of a spring- pressed pawl P carried by the handle and prevented by a pin R fixed in the casing from engaging the lug until the handle has been thrown well over. Opening of the switch is assisted by the pressure on the lever at A<1> of a pin V carried by the handle, the action being completed by the spring. A second detent operated by the handle similarly to the detent G mav be used to prevent the switch from opening until the handle has made a predetermined reverse movement, should the grip of the switch blades be insufficient for this.
