Tools for setting-out work.-A scribing-block is made with the base in two parts insulated from one another and is electrically equipped to give an audible or visible signal when contact of the scriber with the work is established. The two parts a, a<1>, Figs. 1, 2 of the base are insulated by a layer b of non-conducting material, and the battery is housed in the part a<1>. One terminal of the battery bears against a spring connected to the part a<1>, the other terminal bearing against a pivot d of the switch d<1>. The terminal c, insulated from the top part a, is connected to the central contact of a lamp e<1>, the other lamp contact being connected through the lamp protector e<2> to the top a. The circuit is from the battery through the pivot d, switch d<1>, lamp e<1>, top a, pillar g, scriber g<1> and work, surface plate, and base a<1>, to the battery. Instead of housing the battery in the base, it may be contained in a separate box, to the bottom of which a metal plate is fixed to which are brought one outside contact and one lamp contact, the battery being connected to the other outside and lamp contacts. Fig. 15 shows a false base into which the base of an ordinary block may be slipped and held by spring-pressed balls m.
