Connecting uppers to insoles and soles; lasting, methods of.-In a method of making shoes, such as a Goodyear welted shoe, an upper having an inturned flange at one end is assembled with a sole or insole and the flange is permanently secured to one end only of the sole &c., after which a last is inserted in the shoe and the remainder of the upper is drawn to the last and secured to the sole &c. An upper, including the usual lining and stiffeners, is first moulded at the toe, as by means of the apparatus described in Specification 20406/13, [Class 17 (i), Boots and shoes, Apparatus for making &c.], to provide an upstanding flange 8, Fig. 2, after which the heel end of the upper is moulded to form an inturned flange 38, Fig. 7, as by means of the apparatus described in Specification 108,533, [Class 17 (i), Boots and Shoes, Apparatus for making &c.]. An insole 40, which has preferably been moulded to the contour of the last bottom, as described in Specification 153,085, and which is treated with adhesive at its heel end, is then inserted beneath the flange 38 and secured to the upper by pressure; alternatively or additionally, nails may be driven through the flange and clinched against the insole. A last 48, Fig. 10, is then placed in the shoe and the forepart of the upper is pulled over and lasted, such as by means of the machine described in Specification 9793/08, after which the shoe is completed in any known way. In the shaping of the upper the materials are preferably over-moulded, to compensate for their elasticity after they are removed from the moulds.
