Abstract

1536416 Sawing BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 24 June 1976 [25 June 1975] 26860/75 Heading B5L A machine for performing a recessing operaation on a workpiece I, such as the insole of a shoe, comprises a support 3 for a workpiece, a rotary tool 5 mounted on a shaft 7, means for rotating the tool about the axis of the shaft to make a recess R in a workpiece operatively engaged by the tool, and a roller 17 mounted on the shaft to press the workpiece against the support while the recess is being made in the workpiece by the tool, the roller having resilient material 23 which is deformed by pressing the workpiece against the support and a wear resistant workpiece engaging rim member mounted on the resilient material. As described, the support 3 for the workpiece is moved past the cutter which is rotated at 3750 r.p.m. and which consists of a pair of circular saw blades 9, 11 between which is a cutter assembly 13 having four detachable cutters 15, the saw blades being mounted on protruding ends of a sleeve 16 which is pressed into the assembly 13 and is a sliding fit on the shaft 7. A roller 17 is positioned on each side of the cutter arrangement, each roller consisting of a metal rim 33 supported by a resilient material tyre 23 on a wheel 25, in turn, mounted by a needle roller bearing 27 on a hub 19 on the shaft 7. The assembly of rollers 17 and cutter 5 are mounted between plates 39, 43 on the shaft 7, the inner rings 31 of the bearings being axially longer than the rims 33 to provide clearance for the latter. A guard for the assembly is held by a screw member which, if released, trips a microswitch to prevent operation of the motor driving the shaft 7. In operation, the workpiece is positioned on the support 3 which is then advanced by an air-operated piston- and-cylinder device to carry the workpiece to the cutter which forms the recess R in the workpiece, the rollers 17 acting to resiliently press the workpiece against the support. The rollers prevent lifting and slapping of the workpiece and reduce noise during the recessing operation. A lightly operated brake 53 prevents rotation of the rollers by the driven shaft 7 but permits the rollers to rotate when engaged with the workpiece.
