The present invention relates to a machine for trimming and finishing the edges of loose shoe soles, heels, or the like by means of revolving tools such as mills, grinding wheels, or the like, and provided with guide means such as a roller or the like which extends coaxially to the respective tool, and with a support for the workpiece and a duplicating template, and in which the tool and guide means are movable under the action of a force, such as a spring or the like, in a radial di rection toward the work support.
The known edge trimming and finishing machines of the above-mentioned type are either of a relatively complicated design or if they are of a simpler design, they have the disadvantage that it is impossible to avoid the formation of chatter marks on the workpiece when the latter is moved relative to the tool and when the direction of movement of the workpiece is suddenly changed in accordance with a similar change in the direction of the contour of the template. Furthermore, these prior machines then require the workpiece together with the duplicating template to be moved by hand relative to the tool.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an edge trimming and finishing machine of the above-mentioned kind which overcomes the recited disadvantages. For attaining this object, the invention provides the work support in the form of a mounting plate to be eccentrically mounted on a driven disk or the like in such a manner that when this disk is rotated, the work support is also rotated about its own axis. A preferred feature of the invention consists in mounting the mentioned disk so as to be rotatable about a sationary shaft on which a gear is secured which through an intermediate gear is in engagement with another gear which is nonrotatably connected to the work support. If, according to a further feature of the invention, the transmission ratio between the stationary gear and the gear which is secured to the work support is 1:2, the respective work on the workpiece will be completed when the disk or the like has carried out two revolutions. In this manner it is possible to produce circular movements of the work support and the workpiece thereon, for example, two such movements, and thereby to effect a uniform rolling action of the workpiece relative to the respective tool so that any sudden changes in movement which might cause chatter marks on the workpiew will be avoided.
In the event that the workpieces such as soles or the like are not pointed, there is the possibility to secure the template and the workpiece on the work support by a vacuum unit of a conventional type. If the mounting surface of the workpiece is, however, uneven or rough, or if the workpiece has sharp points or projections, it is no longer possible to secure the workpiece so firmly or in such a position on a work support which consists of a flat mounting plate that it can be properly worked upon precisely in accordance with the shape of the template. Although in connection with a sole trimming machine of a different type, as disclosed in the US. Patents No. 2,359,395 and 2,564,718, it is known to secure the soles relative to the work support by means of a clamping device which is pneumatically or hydraulically operated, this clamping device rotates about its own vertical axis which is not also displaced within a horizontal plane. Such clamping means can therefore not be used for securing a sole in a position in which it carries out two different rotary movements simultaneously, namely, one in an eccentric position on a disk which rotates about its central axis and another about its own axis in this eccentric position.
It is therefore a further object of the present invention to mount a sole or the like, which is placed in an eccentric position on a disk or the like in the manner as above described and is rotatable simultaneously about two different axes, in such a manner that a mounting thereof by means of a vacuum may be omitted. For attaining this object, the edge trimming and finishing machine according to the invention is further provided with a stationary vertical supporting member on which an arm is pivotably mounted, the free end of which carries pivotably thereon a second arm, the free end of which carries a cylinder in which a pneumatically or hydraulically operated piston is movable which is mounted on a piston rod which projects from the cylinder and is nonrotatable relative thereto. The outer end of this piston rod is connected through an intermediate clutch member to a pressure member which has an outer shape substantially equal to that of the mounting plate which forms the work support. The intermediate clutch is designed so as to permit the pressure member to be rotated when a pressure is exerted upon the piston rod, but to lock the pressure plate against rotation relative to the piston rod when the pressure upon the latter is discontinued.
Since an edge trimming and finishing machine of this kind is usually employed for working on a large series of workpieces of the same outer shape before the respective template which is used in this work is replaced by another, it is another object of the invention to provide that, after the vertically movable pressure member is raised to permit a finished workpiece to be removed from the machine and after a new workpiece is inserted, the pressure member will, when it is lowered upon the new workpiece, automatically return to the same position in which it was previously located on the last workpiece. For attaining this object, the invention further provides a steel plate on the upper end of the cylinder and an electromagnet which is maintained above this steel plate by a spring and, when energized, is movable in a vertical direction upon the steel plate so as to lock the cylinder against any pivotal movement when the rotatable mounting plate is stopped. If, therefore, after the pressure plate has once been properly adjusted and the work is started on the workpiece, and after the mounting plate forming-the work support has then carried out one complete revolution about its own axis while travelling along a circular path, the movement of the mounting plate is stopped, the electromagnet is automatically energized at the same time so as to engage with the steel plate and thereby to lock the cylinder in a fixed position. Thereupon, the piston, the piston rod, and the pressure member may be raised and the finished workpiece may be removed from the machine. After a new workpiece has then been placed upon the mounting plate, the pressure member may again be lowered to clamp the workpiece, the machine be started, and the work be carried out on this new workpiece. It is advisable not only to provide suitable means whereby the electromagnet is automatically energized as soon as the mounting plate has reached its starting or stop position, but also to provide a manually operated switch for interruptingthe circuit of the magnet. The bearing member of the magnet is preferably mounted by a cross-arm on the stationary sup-' port on which the arm which carries the cylinder is pivotably mounted. The raising and lowering movement of the piston and thus of the pressure member is pref erably controlled by a foot lever and the machine is preferably equipped with two pushbutton switches which, when simultaneously depressed when the pressure member is in its lowered position, cause the required operating pressure to be exerted upon the piston in the cylinder and start the circular movement of the mounting plate.
The above-mentioned objects, features, and advantages of the present invention will become more clearly apparent from the following detailed description thereof, particularly when the same is read with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- FIGURE 1 shows, partly in cross section, a side view of the principal parts of an edge trimming and finishing machine according to the invention, in which the workpieces are held in place by applying a vacuum thereon.
FIGURES 2 to 5 show reduced plan views of the apparatus according to FIGURE 1 in different positions during the operation of the machine;
FIGURE 6 shows, partly in cross section, a side view of the principal parts of an edge trimming and finishing machine according to a modification of the invention, in which the workpieces are held in place by special clamping means;
FIGURE 7 shows a plan view of the apparatus according to FIGURE 6;
FIGURE 8 shows a lateral view of the support for the apparatus of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 9 is a frontal view of FIGURE 8 as indicated by section line IXIX.
Referring to the drawings, the edge trimming and finishing machine according to the invention comprises a stationary gear 1 on a shaft 2 which is rigidly secured to the machine frame, and a disk 3 with a hub 3' thereon which is mounted on a bearing 4 so as to be rotatable about shaft 2 relative to the stationary gear 1. A gear 5 is rotatably mounted on disk 3 in an eccentric position and, through an intermediate gear 6 which is likewise rotatably mounted on disk 3, it is in engagement with the stationary gear 1. The transmission ratio between gears 1 and 5 amounts to 1:2. Gear 5 is secured to and carries a mounting plate 7 which serves as a work support and also carries suitable clamping means for mounting a sole 11 and a duplicating template 12 thereon. A guide element which is movable together with a suitable tool, such as a mill, a grinding wheel, or the like 8, and a duplicating roller 9 are superimposed but separate from each other and are adapted to be reciprocated in a radial direction relative to disk 3 by means of a support which is mounted on ball bearings.
To accomplish this reciprocation of the mill or grinding wheel 8 as well as the duplicating roller 9, these elements are secured to a support 32, see FIGURE 8, which glides to and fro. Each of elements 8 and 9 is independently adjustable. The support 32 is arranged so as to be easily movable back and forth in the grooves of the lower support 35 and retained by means of bolts 33 which have attached thereto ball bearings 34 as illustrated in FIGURE 9. The weight 36 is rigidly connected with the support 32 by means of cable or chain 33 via pulley 37 to allow the duplicating roller 9 to rest firmly against the template 12 of FIGURE 1 at all times and transmit the form or outline of the template to the tool 8. Suitable driving means are provided for tool 8 such as, for example, driving motor 39 which may be directly mounted on the support 32. The drive may, however, also be effected by any conventional means.
If disk 3 which is driven by a V-belt pulley 10 or other suitable driving means revolves in a clockwise direction around the stationary gear 1, mounting plate 7 carries out at every quarter revolution of disk 3 one eighth of a revolution about its own axis in a counterclockwise direction, as seen by a. comparison between FIGURES 2 and 3.
FIGURES 4 and 5 show the respective positions of mounting plate 7 at each further quarter turn of disk 3. Thus, because of the gear ratio of 1:2, any particular point on the periphery of the workpiece will appear at the identical point after every second revolution of disk 3. All outer points of a workpiece may therefore be passed along a grinding wheel or a mill 8 which is movable back and forth under the pressure of the workpiece 11 without causing any chatter marks by a sudden change in direction of engagement of the tool 8 on the workpiece 11.
Template 12 and the workpiece 11 may be secured in a fixed position relative to the mounting plate 7 by a vacuum unit 13 of a conventional type. The mill, grinding wheel, or the like 8 and the duplicating roller 9 may be moved, for example, by spring action, in such a manner in the direction toward the workpiece 11 and the template 12 that the different movements of the parts 8 and 9 will be directly controlled by the template. If a workpiece or a template 12 or both are to be replaced by others, it is advisable to arrest the parts 8 and 9 in a retracted position.
While according to FIGURES 1 to 5 the template 12 and the workpiece 11 are held in a fixed position on the mounting plate 7 merely by a conventional vacuum unit 13 the machine according to the invention may also be provided with a device for clamping the workpiece upon the mounting plate 7. Although this clamping device alone is sufficient for some types of workpieces, it is advisable to leave the existing vacuum unit on the machine or to provide a newly built machine with such a vacuum unit since it is then possible to mount workpieces with plane surfaces very easily without having to resort to the device as hereafter described.
As illustrated in FIGURES 6 and 7, a stationary part 19 of the machine carries a stationary supporting member, such as a column 20 which, in turn, carries pivotably thereon a supporting arm 21, the free end of which carries a shaft 21' on which a bracket 22 is pivotably mounted. Bracket 22 is reinforced by a pair of ribs 22' and its free end 23 carries a cylinder 24 which supports on its upper end a steel plate 25. Column 20 also carries a crossarm 26 which is preferably adjustable on column 20 to different vertical positions and has on its free end a head 27 which forms a bearing for an electromagnet 28 which is resiliently suspended thereon. Cylinder 24 contains a piston which may be acted upon on both sides by a hydraulic or pneumatic pressure and is rigidly connected to a piston rod 29 which is secured against rotating relative to the cylinder 24 and bracket 22. By an intermediate clutch member 31, a pressure member 30 is connected to piston rod 29 so as to be rotatable when the latter is moved and to be locked thereto when the piston rod is stationary. During the operation of the machine, that is, when the mounting plate 7 revolves, piston rod 29 exerts through the intermediate clutch member 31 and the pressure member 30 a pressure in the direction toward mounting plate 7, even though the mounting plate, the template 12, the workpiece 11, and the pressure member 30 carry out a circular motion. When the work on workpiece 11 has been completed and the driving means of the rotary elements have been stopped so that, after the piston rod has been raised, the workpiece 11 can be removed from the machine, the intermediate clutch member 31 is automatically locked to the pressure member 30 so that the latter is then just as nonrotatable as clutch member 31 and piston rod 29 when these parts are moved vertically upwardly. In this manner it is possible to prevent any unintentional rotation of the pressure member 30 about the axis of piston rod 29. The pressure member therefore remains in the same position in which it was located while the work was being carried out on the workpiece.
In the particular embodiment of the invention as illustrated it is assumed that the workpiece consists of a sole which is placed upside down on the mounting plate 7. This sole has an irregular tread surface and is provided vwith a heel. The pressure member 30 is then of a similar shape so that its lower surface corresponds to the lower or tread surface of the sole.
If, for example, workpieces of a different peripheral shape than those of a previous series are to be worked on by the machine, it is at least necessary to exchange the template 12 for another template. Normally, it is then necessary to readjust the pressure member 30 relative to the mounting position of plate 7. By means of a foot lever, not shown, which controls the lifting and lowering of piston rod 29 and thus also of the pressure member 30, a pressure is then generated in cylinder 24 which is relatively low and only causes the pressure member to be lowered. If the pressure member rests on the workpiece and it is found that it should be shifted relative to the workpiece in order to permit the latter to be more uniformly pressed against the mounting plate 7, it is still possible to change the position of pressure member 30 relative to the workpiece. The same is true for the position of the workpiece relative to mounting plate 7. Since the pressure which is then exerted is relatively low, amounting, for example, to only a half atmosphere, although the working pressure may amount, for example, to 8 atmospheres, there is no danger that the operator of the machine might be injured. If two pushbutton switches, not shown, which are provided at such a distance from each other that they can only be actuated by employing both hands simultaneously, are then depressed, the pressure upon the piston which is indirectly connected to the pressure member is increased and the workpiece is pressed firmly against the mounting plate 7. At the sametime, the rotation of disk 3 is started by the V-belt pulley or the like and the mill 8 or other tool is moved against the workpiece 11. After disk 3 has carried out two revolutions, the drive on pulley 10 is stopped, mill 8 together with its guide roller 9 is moved back to its neutral position, and magnet 28 is automatically energized so as to move downwardly relative to the head 27 and to grip plate and thus also the cylinder 24 and the pressure member which may then be raised by the operation of the mentioned foot lever, not shown, so that the finished workpiece can then be removed from the machine. If the next workpiece which is inserted in the machine is to be trimmed to the same outer contour as the previous workpiece, itis only necessary to operate the foot lever to lower the pressure member 30 and to start the machine by depressing the two pushbutton switches since the pressure member is then still in the same position to which it was originally adjusted. Thus, there is no need for any correction of the position of the pressure member. Naturally, magnet 28 must then be deenergized and the two pushbutton switches must be depressed since the pressure member would otherwise not be able to follow the circular movement of mounting plate 7.
Although our invention has been illustrated and described with reference to the preferred embodiments thereof, we wish to have it understood that it is in no way limited to the details of such embodiments, but is capable of numerous modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully disclosed our invention, what we claim is:
1. An edge trimming and finishing machine for loose shoe soles, heels, and the like comprising a rotary tool, means for driving said tool, means for guiding said tool, a work support, a duplicating template adapted to be mounted on said work support and movable therewith, means for moving said tool and said guide means in a radial direction back and forth relative to said work support and said template, and means for rotating said work support simultaneously and in opposite directions about two different axes parallel to but spaced from each other.
2. An edge trimming and finishing machine for loose shoe soles, heels, and the like comprising a rotary tool, means for driving said tool, rotary means coaxial with said tool for guiding the same, a work support having an axis of rotation extending substantially at right angles to the upper surface of said work support and rotatable therewith, means for moving said tool and said guide means in a radial direction back and forth relative to said work support and said template, rotary means for supporting said work support and having an axis of rotation parallel to but spaced from said axis of said work support, gear means connecting said supporting means and said work support thereon to each other, and means for rotating said supporting means about its axis and for thereby also rotating said work support about its axis, said last-mentioned means rotating said work support in a direction opposite to said supporting means and at a speed different from the speed of said supporting means.
3. An edge trimming and finishing machine for loose shoe soles, heels, and the like, comprising a rotary tool, means for driving said tool, rotary means for guiding said tool and coaxial therewith, a stationary shaft, a supporting member rotatably mounted on said shaft, a work support rotatably mounted on said supporting member and having an axis of rotation parallel to, but spaced from the common axis of said shaft and said supporting member, a duplicating template adapted to be mounted on and rotatable with said work support, a stationary gear secured to said shaft, gear means on said work support in engagement with said stationary gear, means for rotating said supporting member and for thereby revolving said work support around said stationary gear whereby said gear means simultaneously rotates said work support about its own axis, said gear means being so constructed and arranged as to rotate said work support in a direction oppos-i-te'to said supporting member and at a speed different from the speed of said supporting member, and resilient means for moving said tool and said guide means in a radial direction back and forth relative to said Work support and said template.
4. An edge trimming and finishing machine for loose shoe soles, heels, and the like, comprising a rotary tool, means for driving said tool, rotary means for guiding said tool and coaxial therewith, a stationary shaft, a supporting member rotatably mounted on said shaft, a work support rotatably mounted on said supporting memher and having an axis of rotation parallel to, but spaced from the common axis of said shaft and said supporting member, a duplicating template adapted to be mounted on and rotatable with said work support, a stationary gear secured to said shaft, gear means on said work support in engagement with said stationary gear, means for rotating said supporting member and for thereby revolving said work support around said stationary gear whereby said gear means simultaneously rotates said work support about its own axis, said gear means being so constructed and arranged as to rotate said work support in a direction opposite to said supporting member, said stationary gear and said gear means having a transmission ratio of 1:2 relative to each other so that at two revolutions of said supporting member, said work support carries out one complete revolution about its own axis, and resilient means for moving said tool and said guide means in a radial direction back and forth relative to said work support and said template.
5. An edge trimming and finishing machine for loose shoe soles, heels, and the like comprising a rotary tool, means for driving said tool, means for guiding said tool, a work support, a duplicating template adapted to be mounted on said work support and movable therewith, means for moving said tool and said guide means in a radial direction back and forth relative to said work support and said template, means for rotating said work supa port simultaneously about two different axes parallel to but spaced from each other, and means for exerting a suction from below upon the upper surface of said work support for securing a workpiece thereon.
6. An edge trimming and finishing machine for loose soles, heels, and the like comprising a rotary tool, means for driving said tool, rotary means coaxial with said tool for guiding the same, a work support, a duplicating template adapted to be mounted on said work support and movable therewith, means for moving said tool and said guide means in a radial direction back and forth relative to said work support and said template, means for rotating said work support simultaneously about two different axes parallel to but spaced from each other, a stationary supporting member extending parallel to said axes, an arm mounted on and pivotable at one end about the axis of said supporting member, a second arm pivotably connected at one end to the other end of said first arm, a cylinder mounted on the other end of said second arm, a piston slidable within but nonrotatable relative to said cylinders, fluid pressure means for acting upon said piston within said cylinder, a piston rod secured to said piston and projecting from one end of said cylinder toward said work support and extending parallel to said axes thereof, a clutch member on the outer end of said piston rod, and a pressure member connected to said clutch member and adapted to act upon said work support for clamping a workpiece thereon, said pressure member having a peripheral shape substantially corresponding to the peripheral shape of said work support, said clutch member being adapted to permit said pressure member to be rotated relative to said piston rod by said work support and in accordance with the movements thereof when a pressure is exerted by said piston and piston rod upon said mounting plate, while when said pressure is discontinued, said clutch member locks said pressure member nonrotatably to said piston rod.
7. An edge trimming and finishing machine for loose soles, heels, and the like comprising a rotary tool, means for driving said tool, rotary means coaxial with said tool for guiding the same, a work support, a duplicating template adapted to be mounted on said work support and movable therewith, means for moving said tool and said guide means in a radial direction back and forth relative to said work support and said template, means for rotating said work support simultaneously about two different axes parallel to but spaced from each other, a stationary supporting member extending parallel to said axes, an arm mounted on and pivotable at one end about the axis of said supporting member, a second arm pivotably connected at one end to the other end of said first arm, a cylinder mounted on the other end of said second arm, a piston slidable within but nonrotatable relative to said cylinder, fluid pressure means for acting upon said piston within said cylinder, a piston rod secured to said piston and projecting from one end of said cylinder toward said work support and extending parallel to said axes thereof, a clutch member on the outer end of said piston rod, a pressure member connected to said clutch member and adapted to act from above upon said work support for clamping a workpiece thereon, said pressure member having a peripheral shape substantially corresponding to the peripheral shape of said work support, said clutch member being adapted to permit said pressure member to be rotated relative to said piston rod by said work support and in accordance with the movements thereof when a pressure is exerted by said piston and piston rod upon said mounting plate, while when said pressure is discontinued, said clutch member locks said pressure member nonrotatably to said piston rod, and means for exerting a suetion from below upon the upper surface of said work support for securing a workpiece thereon.
8. An edge trimming and finishing machine for loose soles, heels, and the like comprising a rotary tool, means for driving said tool, rotary means coaxial with said tool for guiding the same, a work support, a duplicating template adapted to be mounted on said work support and movable therewith, means for moving said tool and said guide means in a radial direction back and forth relative to said work support and said template, means for rotating said work support simultaneously about two different axes parallel to be spaced from each other, means for starting and stopping said rotating means, a stationary supporting member extending parallel to said axes, an arm mounted on and pivotable at one end about the axis of said supporting member, a second arm pivotably connected at one end to the other end of said first arm, a cylinder mounted on the other end of said second arm, a piston slidable within but nonrotatable relative to said cylinder, fiuid pressure means for acting upon said piston within said cylinder, 2. piston rod secured to said piston and projecting from one end of said cylinder toward said work support and extending parallel to said axes thereof, a clutch member on the outer end of said piston rod, :1 pressure member connected to said clutch member and adapted to act upon said work support for clamping a workpiece thereon, said pressure member having a pcripheral shape substantially corresponding to the pcripheral shape of said work support, said clutch member being adapted to permit said pressure member to be rotated relative to said piston rod by said work support and in accordance with the movements thereof when a pressure is exerted by said piston and piston rod upon said mounting plate, while when said pressure is discontinued, said clutch member locks said pressure member nonrotatably to said piston rod, a steel plate secured to the other end of said cylinder, an electromagnet mounted adjacent to said steel plate, means for energizing said magnet to move the same from an inoperative position spaced from said steel plate to a position in engagement with said steel plate to lock said cylinder against any pivotal movement when the rotary movements of said work support are stopped, and spring means for returning said electromagnet to said inoperative position when said magnet is deenergized.
9. An edge trimming and finishing machine for loose soles, heels, and the like comprising a rotary tool, means for driving said tool, rotary means coaxial with said tool for guiding the same, a work support, a duplicating template adapted to be mounted on said work support and movable therewith, means for moving said tool and said guide means in a radial direction back and forth relative to said work support and said template, means for rotating said work support simultaneously about two dilferent axes parallel to but spaced from each other, means for starting said rotating means, means for automatically stopping said rotating means when said work support reaches a certain position in its circular path of movement, a stationary supporting member extending parallel to said axes, an arm mounted on and pivotable at one end about the axis of said supporting member, a second arm pivotably connected at one end to the other end of said first arm, a cylinder mounted on the other end of said second arm, a piston slidable within but nonrotatable relative to said cylinder, fluid pressure means for acting upon said piston within said cylinder toward said work support and extending parallel to said axes thereof, a clutch member on the outer end of said piston rod, a pressure member connected to said clutch member and adapted to act upon said work support for clamping a workpiece thereon, said pressure member having a peripheral shape substantially corresponding to the peripheral shape of said work support, said clutch member being adapted to permit said pressure member to be rotated relative to said piston rod by said work support and in accordance with the movements thereof when a pressure is exerted by said piston and piston rod upon said mounting plate, while when said pressure is discontinued, said clutch member locks said pressure member nonrotatably to said piston rod, a steel plate secured to the other end of said cylinder,

Claims (1)

1. AN EDGE TRIMMING AND FINISHING MACHINE FOR LOOSE SHOE SOLES, HEELS, AND THE LIKE COMPRISING A ROTARY TOOL, MEANS FOR DRIVING SAID TOOL, MEANS FOR GUIDING SAID TOOL, A WORK SUPPORT, A DUPLICATING TEMPLATE ADAPTED TO BE MOUNTED ON SAID WORK SUPPORT AND MOVABLE THEREWITH, MEANS FOR MOVING SAID TOOL AND SAID GUIDE MEANS IN A RADIAL DIRECTION BACK AND FORTH RELATIVE TO SAID WORK SUPPORT AND SAID TEMPLATE, AND MEANS FOR ROTATING SAID WORK SUPPORT SIMULTANEOUSLY AND IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS ABOUT TWO DIFFERENT AXES PARALLEL TO BUT SPACED FROM EACH OTHER.
