Abstract

1311257 Abrasive tools CONCUT Inc 13 Sept 1971 42587/71 Heading B3D [Also in Division E1] A rotary cutter assembly for a pavement grooving machine comprises a shaft 14 having means at its opposite ends whereby it may be fixedly secured to spaced apart members 12 of the machine, a generally cylindrical rotary cutter mounting drive sleeve 32 rotatably mounted on the shaft, a series of flat annular disc-like cutters 60 and spacer members 62 mounted on the sleeve, a series of clamping bolts 76 positioned radially outwardly from the sleeve and extending through the cutters and spacer members, reaction means 92 preventing longitudinal shifting of the cutters and spacer members, means 56 for applying torque to the drive sleeve, and means 86 establishing a driving connecting between the sleeve and the cutters. The shaft 14 has stepped reduced diameter end portions and is secured by studs 24 and nuts 25 to the frame members 12. A roller bearing 42, 44 embraced by seals 48, 50 is disposed on each reduced diameter end portion and supports the sleeve 32 for rotation on the shaft. Midway along the sleeve is a raised rib 90 welded to a member 92 forming the reacting means and two clusters of cutters 70 and spacers 62 are mounted on the sleeve one each side of the member 92. Each cutter consists of a thin disc 63 having arcuate abrasive cutter segments 70 silver soldered to the rim and separated by radial slits (66, Fig. 4, not shown). The cutters 70 and spacers 62 are clamped together by the clamping bolts 76 which also pass through spacer members 80 and pulleys 56 for applying torque to the sleeve, the members 80 being between the pulleys and the clusters. Keys 88 establish the driving connection between each spacer member and the sleeve.
