A rotary cutting machine comprises a pair of rotatable circular cutter blades disposed so that a portion of a face of one blade overlaps and drivably engages a face of the other blade, means to incline and to change the angle of inclination of the axis of one cutter blade with respect to the axis of the other cutter blade, and means for rotating one of the blades to impart drive to the other blade. As shown in Fig. 1, the cutting machine comprises a plurality of cutter assemblies 10 mounted on a fixed shaft 5 and a plurality of cutter assemblies 11 drivably mounted on a parallel rotatable shaft 6, each cutter assembly 11 having a spring-loaded cutter blade 22, Fig. 9, slidable axially into contact with a cutter blade 34, Fig. 8, of a cutter assembly 10, the blade 34 being carried on a bearing mounting 31 upon which it can be adjustably inclined with respect to the blade 22 by means of a rotatable adjusting plate 26 having on one side face thereof cam surfaces which bear against the heads of pins 24c, 24d pressed into the collar portion 24a of a cutter body 24. An annular thrust race 32 fits over the outer circumference of the bearing mounting 31 which has a shoulder portion 31a fitting within the bore of a ball-race 33 rotatably carrying the blade 34. To obtain increased pressure at the cutting point, each cutter assembly 10 is provided with a pressure attachment 36, Fig. 2, which comprises a link 39 pivotally mounted on a member 37 clamped to the shaft 5, one end of the link having an adjusting screw 41 for contacting the plate 26 and the other end of the link being engageable by an operating lever 38 pivoted to the member 37. To locate the cutter assemblies axially on the shafts 5, 6 each cutter assembly is provided with a pair of manually - operable spring - loaded pivotallymounted levers 15 having teeth 15a for selectively engaging one of a plurality of pairs of equally-spaced diametrically-opposed slots 12 provided on the shafts 5, 6. The material to be cut is fed through an adjustable guide assembly 49, Fig. 1, comprising slotted guides 45a, 45b mounted on blocks 46a, 46b having threaded bores engaging left- and right-hand screwthreads 42a, 42b of a rotatable spindle 42. Means, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), are provided for adjusting the shaft 5 axially and laterally. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 711,055.
