Abstract
The installation has an electrode device in order to inject an additional plasma current into the main plasma current. The plasma-generating electrode device comprises an elongated centre electrode (22) in the interior of a hollow electrode (26), which is provided with a gas inlet (30, 32) and a gas outlet (28), as well as a voltage source, which is connected to the two electrodes (22, 26), for igniting an arc in order to generate the ionisation of the gas in the cavity (24) of the electrode device. The primary MMD magnetic field (B) has an x-component (Bx) in the longitudinal direction of the centre electrode (22), which component allows the arc to rotate in a plane at right angles to the centre electrode. In order in addition to allow the arc to move to and fro along the centre electrode (22) and hence to prevent electrode erosion at high current densities, the primary field (B) has a z-component (Bz) at right angles to the centre electrode (22). This z-component is achieved by arranging the centre electrode (22, 28) at an angle (a) with respect to the direction of the primary field (B), as a result of which additional magnetic coils can be saved for generating the z-component. <IMAGE>
