Abstract

1536228 Hinges with resilient detents I H W ENG Ltd 31 March 1976 12925/76 Heading E2F A hinge, particularly suitable for a vehicle rear door, comprises mounting portions 11, 12 linked by parallel pivots 20, 21 to an arm 15, and rocker members 30, 31 pivoted at 22 to the arm 15 and urged by a spring 29 against cams 24, 25 respectively which are mounted on the portions 11, 12; no movement being possible about pivot 20 until portion 12 has been pivoted about 21 to an extent defined by a stop, further movement then being possible only about 21 when a resilient detent has been overcome. Rebates 24a, 25a are provided in the cams and end 30a of rocker member 30 is normally biassed into rebate 24a to prevent any movement about pivot 20. When portion 12 has been pivoted clockwise about 90‹ (from the Fig. 3 position) about pivot 21 until it abuts the arm 15 (shown in Fig. 1 in dash-dot lines), end 31a of rocker member is able to enter rebate 25a and at the same time an opposite end 30b of member 30 is free to enter this rebate. This freedom allows rocker member 30 to pivot about 22 so that end 30a acts now merely as a resilient restraint that can be overcome to allow a pivotal movement about 20 of about 180‹ to the dotted position shown in Fig. 1. In the reverse direction movement about pivot 21 only is possible until end 30a can, urged by the spring, reenter the rebate 24a. End 30b then is lifted out of rebate 25a but end 31a of member 31 remains in the rebate as a resilient restraint that must be overcome before final pivoting about 21 can occur. The arm 15 is formed from side plates 16, 17 and base plate 27. There are three central rocker members 30 and two outside rocker members 31 engaged by a laminated leaf spring 29 located on the plate 27. Portion 11 is designed to be attached to a vehicle body and portions 12 to a rear door.
