Abstract

787,779. Hinges and Divots. LIBBEYOWENS-FORD GLASS CO. Nov. 28, 1955 [Dec. 7, 1954], No. 33971/55. Class 65(2) [Also in Group XXXII] A rear-view mirror for automobiles comprises a support plate 23 carried by a truncated ball 32 secured to the automobile, the plate having slots 25 to receive bent tabs 24 on a mounting plate 19 which carries a casing 11 for a mirror element 10 of wedge section. The tabs 24 are maintained in position in the slots 25 by means of leaf springs 27 which extend through slots 28 formed in the tabs and are held at the bottom in slots 29 in a flange 21 of the mounting plate 19. An actuator arm 41 is pivoted to the plate 19 at 42 and is provided with a bar 43 formed with a slot 44 which receives a cam plate 45 carried from the support plate 23. The lower portion of the arm 41 passes through slots 49 in the flange 21 and in the bottom wall 14 of the casing 11 and has a knob 50 which can be moved in an arcuate path. This movement causes the cam plate 45 to ride in the slot 44, so that the mounting plate pivots on the support plate 23 and the mirror and its casing are moved to one of three positions determined by the engagement of a protuberance 51 on the actuator arm 41 in one of three depressions x, y and z provided in the plate 19. The mirror 10 as shown has a body a of glass or other transparent material and has front and rear reflection surfaces b, c respectively. The surface b may be semitransparent and have a reflectivity much less than that of the surface c. In a modification, torsion springs are used to hold the tabs 24 in place and the depresions x, y, z are adapted to be engaged by a spring-pressed ball instead of the protuberance 51. Specification 757,974 is referred to.
