Abstract
1536041 Manganese chloride UNIVERSITE LIBRE DE BRUXELLES 27 May 1976 [27 May 1975] 22104/76 Heading C1A An oxygen-containing manganese compound is reacted with a melt containing calcium chloride and/or magnesium chloride, typically at 300- 1200 C. to obtain manganese chloride in liquid form and a solid residue. Manganese may be recovered from the liquid by electrolysis. The reaction is preferably performed in a molten salt bath which also contains alkali metal and alkaline earth metal chlorides. The liquid containing MnCl 2 may be separated from the melt by decantation followed by hot filtering. Suitable manganese-containing starting materials are MnO, Mn 3 O 4 , Mn 2 O 3 , MnO 2 , manganese carbonate, hydrated, carbonated, siliceous or oxidized manganese ores, or slags from a Martin furnace, electric steel furnace, ferromanganese or silicomanganese elaborating furnace. When the starting material contains manganese with a valency higher than 2, the reaction is preferably performed in the presence of a reducing agent, e.g. CO, H 2 or C or is reduced prior to reaction. The temperature required for the reaction may be reduced by the addition of silica and/or alumina to the reaction mixture.
