Abstract

1536030 Hydrogenation of coal SAARBERGWERKE AG 3 Feb 1976 [5 July 1975] 4102/76 Heading C5E A mixture of ground coal and a pasting oil is preheated and treated with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. Co-Mo or Ni-W on an Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 carrier) and a heavy oil or residue from petroleum processing is simultaneously hydrogenated in the same reactor. The hydrogenation effluent is distilled to produce gas, naphtha, medium distillate, heavy oil and a residue and portions of the heavy oil and of the residue can be recycled as the pasting oil. The process can be carried out in a plant adapted for the hydrogenation of (a) coal (plus pasting oil) alone, (b) heavy petroleum oil or residue alone or (c) a mixture of coal plus pasting oil with petroleum oil or residue.
