Abstract

Sulphite- or hydrogen-sulphite-containing waste waters are purified with simultaneous substantial recovery of sulphur dioxide by establishing an acidic pH range in the sulphur-dioxide-containing waste water and expelling the liberated sulphurdioxide at elevated temperatures using air as far as a residual sulphurdioxide concentration of 1-10 g of SO2/l of waste water. After the treatment with air, the waste water is reacted at temperatures of 20 to 230 DEG C with industrially pure oxygen at pressures of 1 to 30 bar at a redox potential between 300 and 600 mV up to virtually complete formation of sulphate. The redox potentials are based on a measurement which is performed at a measurement position outside the reaction vessel using a platinum electrode having an Ag/AgCl comparison electrode.
