Abstract
1534718 Tension testing weld joints in wire DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 7 Jan 1977 [10 Oct 1975] 41690/75 Heading G1S A wire 11 Fig. 1a having a welded joint (not shown) in its length is positioned to lie between an upper and lower series of rollers by sideways movement, that is by movement parallel to the axes of the rollers. Rollers 7, 8 at least are driven and the upper series of rollers may be adjusted individually to grip and flex the wire as in Fig. 1c for example to vary the pull through tension on the weld. Automatic sensing of the wire diameter by linear variable differential transducer may be arranged to control the movement of jockey rollers 1, 3, 5 and the pressure of pinch roller 7. In Figs. 2a, c and e (not shown) an increasing number of jockey rollers engage the wire to increase the draw through tension and torsion may also be applied by rocking individual roller mountings. In another embodiment the wire may be held stationary whilst the rollers are moved along the wire.
