1534291 Door operating devices; poweroperated hinges DUNLOP Ltd 15 March 1976 [20 March 1975] 11566/75 Headings E2F and E2M A device for operating a vehicle door comprises a casing 84 and a barrel 82 interconnected for relative rotation about the longitudinal axis of the barrel and being adapted to be fixed the one relative to a frame part and the other relative to a door, a piston 77 reciprocable in a cylinder in the casing in response to pressurised fluid admitted into the cylinder via an inlet in the casing 84, and a plate 70 located in the barrel 82, the plate being spirally twisted about an axis coincident or parallel with that of the barrel 82 and connected to the piston 77 e.g. by a clevis and pin arrangement 72, so that reciprocation of the piston 77 will cause axial displacement of the plate 70 longitudinally of the barrel 82, follower means e.g. two pairs of rollers 86, 87, being provided in and fixed relative to the barrel 82 to engage opposite sides of the plate 70, and means e.g. a roller assembly 71 supported by a non-rotatable bearing block 80, to prevent rotation of the plate 70 relative to the casing 84 so that longitudinal movement of the plate 70 causes rotation of the barrel 82 relative to the casing 84. As described, the casing 84 and bearing block 80 are secured to a base integral with the frame part, the barrel 82 being coupled to an actuation arm 95 of a door. The axes of the rollers 86, 87 are preferably inclined relative to the axis of the plate 70 to give increased contact between the rollers and the plate. In an alternative embodiment the rollers are at 90‹ to the plate, and the means for preventing rotation of the plate relative to the casing comprises a pin extending across the casing, the pin travelling in an axially elongated slot in a spool non-rotatably fixed to one end of the plate.
