Abstract

1534188 Grinding; milling BCIRA 16 Nov 1977 [16 Nov 1976] 47611/76 Headings B3D and B3K Apparatus for removing unwanted material from the periphery of workpieces of arbitrary shape, such as in the fettling of metal castings, comprises a metal-removing means 1, e.g. a grinding wheel, abrasion belt or milling cutter, means to bring the metal-removing means and workpiece towards one another and then to cause relative rotation between the two about an axis within the workpiece, and means controlling the distance between the axis of rotation and metal-removing means consisting primarily of a template 9 and additionally sensing means 18 adapted to engage the workpiece at a region closely following the metal-removing means and to respond to local projections and progressively effect incremental changes in the distance in a correcting sense. As described the metalremoving means is a grinding wheel 1 having a curved periphery, but the workpiece 3 is held by a clamp 8 in a rubber mould 7 on the upper end of a vertical shaft, the lower end of which carries the template 9. The shaft is rotatably mounted in a casing 5 movable about a pivot by an arm 6 to engage the workpiece and template with the grinding wheel and a roller 10, respectively. The roller is driven and frictionally drives the template to effect rotation thereof and of the workpiece and is of stepped form having a plurality of positions 16 on each of which is mounted an O-ring 15. The sensing device 18 has two outer discs 19 of non-conducting material, one on each side of a smaller disc of conducting material. The device is connected to means for moving the stepped roller axially of its shaft to engage a different sized portion with the template if flashing on a workpiece is not removed to a required depth.
