A pair of trousers is pressed by positioning the legs on two lower horizontal pressing plates 2, 3 inclined at 90‹-110‹ to each other and clamping the legs thereto by clamps 11, moving the clamps 11 to stretch the legs longitudinally, applying suction to apertures 17 in the plates 1, 2 to hold the legs thereto, removing the clamps 11, positioning the plates 1, 2 vertically below upper plates 4, 5 each comprising two parts 4a, 4b and 5a, 5b, closing the plates 4, 5 onto the plates 1, 2, separating the parts 4a, 4b and 5a, 5b so as to stretch the legs transversely, and applying steam through the apertures 17 and pressure to press the legs. As shown, the plates 1, 2 are mounted on a carriage 6a movable on rails 6 by a pneumatic cylinder (6b), Fig. 1 (not shown). The plate 3 is carried by a slide 3a movable on rails 9 relative to the plate 2 so that, in use, the waist band and upper part of the trousers can be accommodated therebetween, Fig. 5. Opening and closing of each clamp 11 is effected by a cylinder 12, the cylinders 12 and the clamps 11 being movable on rails 13 to effect the longitudinal stretching of the trouser legs. Each plate 2, 3 comprises a flat plate 14 having padding 10 thereon and apertures 17 therein connected to chambers 15, 16 which are connectable separately or together to a suction source or a steam supply pipe. The plates 4, 5 are movable vertically by cylinders 8 and the parts 4a, 4b and 5a, 5b are connected by members 15a so that the parts can be moved apart in pairs transversely of their longitudinal direction. Transversely extensible padding 25 covers the plates 4, 5 which may be made of wood or plastics and are preferably unheated, but may be heated if required.
