Abstract
1532096 Infrared zoom lenses PILKINGTON PE Ltd 19 May 1977 [20 May 1976] 20833/76 Heading G2J An infrared zoom lens comprises a first positive focusing element 1; a middle zoom part composed of a positive element 2 and a negative element 3 both of which are axially moveable in an interrelated manner; and a rear part composed of a positive element 4 and a weaker negative element 5; all the elements being transmissive in the atmospheric window between 8 and 13 microns, and the last element (5) having a greater dispersion than the penultimate element (4). In practise the last element is of Zn Se, and all the others are of Ge. The lens has a long back focal length so that scanning components can be interposed between the lens and the image plane. The image surface is curved to be compatible with a curved detector array. The design is astigmatic such that the saggital and tangential foci are spaced either side of the image plane. The example has a focal length variable between 130 and 455 units.
