Abstract

1531715 Adhesive tapes SMITH & NEPHEW RESEARCH Ltd 27 Oct 1975 [1 Nov 1974 (2)] 47403/74 and 47416/74 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions D1 and D2] A thermoplastic polymer film having a regular pattern of raised areas 4 on one side and parallel grooves on the other side is stretched exclusively or predominantly in the direction of the grooves, the stretching if any normal to the grooves not exceeding 50% of the unstretched length. The fabric of Fig. 3 is obtained by stretching a melt embossed film composed of two incompatible polymers by 50 to 250% in the groove direction. If a monopolymer film is used thick strands (16, Fig. 4) are produced. Stretching in both directions or brushing fibrillates membranes 8 to leave hexagonal non fibrous areas 4. The polymer(s) may be high density polyethylene, polypropylene ethylene-polypropylene copolymer, polyamide or polystyrene. Preferably there are 50 to 500 grooves and 10 to 100 bosses per inch. A sheet or tape of the fabric may be given a continuous or discontinuous coating of polyacrylate, acrylic/rubber or polyvinyl ethyl ether adhesive on one side, e.g. with a roller or by protecting one side with a removable liner and immersing it in a solution or emulsion of the adhesive to produce an adhesive surgical tape or wound dressing. Alternatively both sides may be coated and the product used to laminate two porous sheets.
