Abstract
1454218 Laminates SUN VENTURES Inc 19 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 54946/74 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions D1-D2] An orientated foam fibrillated web formed of a blend of 30 to 80% polypropylene and 20 to 70% of a more hydrophilic dyeable resin weighs 0À1 to 2 oz./yd.<SP>2</SP>. It may be laminated to a plurality of fibrillated webs. The hydrophilic resin may be polyacrylonitrile, nylon 6, 6.6, 6.10, 6.12, 11, or copolymers thereof containing 5 to 50% of the repeating unit polyethylene terephthalate, poly(butylene 1,4- terephthalate) or an ionomer, i.e. an addition copolymer containing 0À2 to 25 mole per cent styrene sulphonic acid, α,#-ethylenically unsaturated acid (many specified) or salt thereof. The resin mixture plus sodium carbonate or other specified blowing agent is extruded via a slit or annular die from an extruder at 350 to 550 F. The foamed film is quenched by jets of cold air and fibrillated by a first pair of nip rolls moving at 2 to 10 times the speed of extrusion. The fibrillated web is fed over a heated shoe and drawn by a second pair of nip rolls moving at 2 to 8 times the speed of the first rolls to orientate the web. Lamination.-1 to 5 of the above webs may be laminated to each side of one or more non dyeable and generally stronger webs by hot pressing or hot calendering. The stronger web(s) weigh 2 to 20 oz./yd.<SP>2</SP>. and are prepared by fibrillating, e.g. foam fibrillating, polypropylene containing up to 25% by weight of polyethylene, polystyrene, polybutene-1, polymethylmethacrylate or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, preferably the stronger webs are crosslapped whilst the dyeable webs are laid straight. Adhesive may be provided in the form of films, powder or emulsion of thermoplastic resin softening at 80 to 170 C., e.g. polyvinyl chloride (plasticized or not) polyvinylidine chloride, polystyrene, polyethylene and unorientated polypropylene film.
