Abstract

1,130,395. Adhesive tapes. T. J. SMITH & NEPHEW Ltd. 2 Feb., 1967 [9 Feb., 1966], No. 5581/66. Heading B2E. An adhesive tape has a backing made from either (a) a thermoplastic sheet material having a regularly spaced relief or recessed pattern on at least one surface, the sheet material being capable of forming a non woven net upon stretching or stressing biaxially; or (b) a thermoplastic sheet material as in (a) that has been stretched uniaxially or biaxially. The thermoplastic material may be polymers or copolymers of olefins particularly ethylene. The adhesive may be solvent, heat, or pressure sensitive and may be of acrylic resin or rubber based e.g. of pale crepe rubber and poly-betapinene resin. Rubber-based adhesive may require the use of a primer coat of, for example, acrylic-rubber emulsion. High density polyethylene backing may be surface treated e.g. by corona discharge, prior to coating with adhesive. The adhesive may be applied to one or both surfaces of the backing by immersion or roller techniques. The tape may be produced 'by (i) applying the adhesive to the unstretched thermoplastic sheet material having a regularly spaced relief or recessed pattern on at least one surface; (2) stretching the adhesive coated unstretched material in one or two directions at right angles; or (3) applying the adhesive to the thermoplastic sheet material which has been stretched in one or two directions. The stretching in two directions may be done in two stages or simultaneously. Where necessary, the openings in the net may be blown free of adhesive, after application of the adhesive to the stretched material, by an air blow. Tapes having adhesive on one surface may be coated on the other surface with a release coating. Tapes coated with adhesive on both surfaces are provided with a releasable liner to permit winding. The tapes may be applied to window glass, or, if coated on both surfaces, may be used to join two or more porous sheets to form a laminate e.g. in clothing.
