A transparent plastics film which is thermoplastic only above 290‹ F. and is about 0À5 to 10 mils thick, is laminated to a base sheet by applying a solution of a thermosetting rubberresin adhesive to the surface of the plastics film, drying the adhesive by heating, applying the same adhesive to the base sheet and heating the base sheet to about 400‹ F. to dry and partially set the adhesive, then bringing the adhesive layers together under temporary heat and pressure to bond the plastics film to the base sheet. The plastics film may have a coating of vapour deposited metal. The base sheet 1 (Fig. 1) is coated with adhesive 5 and is passed through an oven 7 to dry and partially set the adhesive. The base sheet may be metal or a wire or plastic mesh (not shown). The plastics film 12 with its layer of vapour deposited metal 13 and dried adhesive 23a (Fig. 2) is taken from a reel 14 and is bonded to the base sheet 1 by passing them between a fixed roll 15 and a heated and adjustable roll 16. The resulting laminate 23 is cooled by air at 24 and is taken up on reel 25. The plastics film may be polyvinyl fluoride, a polyester, a polyamide or a fluorinated ethylene copolymer and the vapour deposited metal may be aluminium. A suitable adhesive is a phenol resin modified with nitrile rubber and suitable metal base sheets are aluminium and steel. A design or nameplate may be printed on the film before the vapour deposited metal is applied. The laminate may be used for wall finishes, light and heat reflectors and may be shaped by conventional techniques into articles, e.g. a holder for a rear-view mirror.
