A process for protecting material surface by applying thereto a protective film that can be detached therefrom, the protective film comprising a film laminate including an external layer of a thermoplastic material having a melting or softening point lower than any such point of the other layer or layers of the laminate, comprises heating the latter until the external layer fuses or softens and applying the film to the material surface with the fused or softened layer in contact therewith. The difference in softening or melting points of the layers of the film, which may be transparent or include a transparent layer, is at least 20‹ C. Preferably the external layer to be applied to the surface consists of polyethylene and another layer of the film laminate is polypropylene, e.g. biaxially stretched polypropylene film. The other layer may also be constituted by a film of polyester, polyamide, ceullose ether, cellulose ester, polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride, transparent paper which may be printed or dyed, or aluminium. The external layer may be replaced of polyvinyl acetate or a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. Heating may be effected by infra-red radiation or hot air, by heating the material surface to be protected or by heating the rollers used to press the protective laminate on to the surface to be protected. The latter may consist of the surfaces of steel or aluminium sheets, pressed plates of melamine resin, plastics coated chip boards and asbestos plates, glass plates, mirrors, marble plates or synthetic plastics films.
