Abstract

1347176 Fibre coated films TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 15 March 1972 [18 March 1971] 12022/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] An electrically-insulating laminate, which may be used as a dielectric spacer in capacitors, comprises a non-woven fleece of oriented thermoplastic fibrils, predominantly having diameter 0.04-0.5 mils and length 0.4-4 inches, and a biaxially-oriented thermoplastic film fused together, the film constituting over 40 wt. % of the laminate. The fibrils preferably have tentacles to assist interengagement and a birefringence less than half the maximum; they may be formed by melt-spinning and may be partially melt-bonded before the fleece is formed. The laminate may be prepared by fusing non-oriented or partly-oriented fibrils of the aforesaid diameter and length to a non-oriented film and biaxially stretching the product. The fleece may be formed during fusion of the fibrils to the film by spraying molten fibrils on to a solid or molten film. The fused assembly may be longitudinally stretched by rollers and laterally stretched in a tenter. The product may be heat-set under tension and/or in relaxed condition. Any nap resulting is removed by calendering or by flame treatment. The fibrils and film are preferably of the same chemical class of polymer; isotactic polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate are preferred, but polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyamide and polycarbonate may be used. ,
