Abstract

1493512 Embossed film and laminates ETHYL CORP 6 Feb 1975 [21 Feb 1974] 5157/75 Headings B5B and B5N In an embossed thermoplastic film a surface is provided with two groups of rows of protuberances, preferably frusto-pyrimidal, 15, as shown in Fig. 2 but also pyrimidal or hemispherical, the first group of rows 16 extending perpendicular to the second group of rows 17, each of the first group of rows being separated from the next row of the first group by a continuous valley 18 and each of the second group of rows being separated from the next row of the second group by aligned valleys 19. Films including multilayer films, may be prepared from polymerized or copolymerized ethylenes, vinyl monomers, polyesters, polyamides, cellulosics or styrene-nitrile copolymers and graft polymers. Multilayer films may be made from polyethylene : nylon; HDPE : LDPE : HDPE; LDPE : polyvinyl acetate; LDPE and LDPE : polypropylene : LDPE. A preformed web may be passed through embossing rollers or a melt extruded directly into the nip of a pair of embossing rollers. One roll may be a hollow steel cylinder having the pattern engraved on its surface to provide an upwardly extending male pattern on its surface, e.g. 20- 250 protuberances per lineal inch and the other roll may be provided with a resilient rubber covering preferably of hardness 35-95 durometer. A back up roll pressed against the embossing roll applies a pressure of 50-500 pounds per lineal inch between the nips of the rolls. One or both rolls are provided with cooling means.
