Abstract

Cylinder, platen, and rotary machines; inking- apparatus.-The formes of addressing and other machines are inked by rolling contact with an inkribbon which is stretched over a cylindrical supporting-member, and receives an intermittent movement thereon by means of reels to which the ends of the ribbon are attached, the ribbon being removed from the forme before the printing operation. In one construction, Fig. 1, the reciprocating forme 7 is inked by a ribbon 3 stretched over a segment 5 rotatable about a shaft 6. The ribbon is intermittently wound on one or other of the spools 1, 2 by any suitable means. The segment 5 is preferably of rubber or other resilient material. The sheets to be printed are inserted between the forme 7 and a platen 8, as shown, or pass between the forme and an impression cylinder. In the rotary machine, Fig. 3, the forme cylinder 10 is engaged successively by the ribbon 3 stretched over the segment 5, and an impression segment 12. The segments 5, 12 are carried by a rotating member 11. In another construction, the ink ribbon is stretched round a cylinder having a longitudinal slot through which the ends of the ribbon pass to the spools which are mounted within the cylinder.
