1531091 Pharmaceutical preparations CIBA GEIGY AG 5 Jan 1976 [6 Jan 1975] 00144/76 Heading A5B Pharmaceutical preparations useful as hypnotics for inducing and prolonging sleep and for releiving sleep disorders contain as pharmacological active compounds a compound of the formula: wherein Ar 1 represents a monocyclic or polycyclic, carbocyclic or heterocyclic radical which contains at least one ring of aromatic character and which is bonded to the oxygen atom via a ring carbon atom, said radicals being unsubstituted or substituted by one or two substituents selected from lower (i.e. C 1-7 ) alkyl, lower alkenyl or lower alkinyl, said lower alkyl, lower alkenyl or lower alkinyl being optionally substituted by lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio or halogen, carboxy, lower alkoxycarbonyl, carbamoyl, N-lower alkylated carbamoyl, amino, lower alkanoylamino, lower alkoxy-carbonylamino, ureido, N-lower alkyl-ureido, N', N'-di-lower alkyl-ureido or lower alkylsulphonylamino, or substituted by one or two substituents selected from monocyclic or polycyclic cycloalkyl, hydroxyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkenyloxy, lower alkinyloxy, mercapto, lower alkylthio, lower alkenylthio, halogen, lower alkanoyloxy, lower alkanoyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl, carbamoyl, N-lower alkylcarbamoyl, N, N-di-lower alkylcarbamoyl, cyano, nitro, amino, lower alkanoylamino, lower alkoxycarbonylamino, ureido, N'-lower alkyl-ureido, N', N'-di-lower alkyl-ureido, lower alkylsulphonylureido, lower alkyl sulphonylamino, N-lower alkylamino or N, N-di-lower alkylamino, optionally unsubstituted N, N-lower alkyleneamino, N, N-azalower alkyleneamino, N, N-oxa-lower alkylene-amino or N, N-thia-lower alkyleneamino, R 1 denotes lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkinyl, cycloalkyl or phenyl-lower alkyl, said lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkinyl or cycloalkyl being optionally substituted by lower alkyl, phenoxy or pyridyloxy optionally substituted by carbamoyl, N-lower alkylcarbamoyl or N, N-di-lower alkyl-carbamoyl, or optionally substituted by carboxyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl carbamoyl, N-lower alkylcarbamoyl, N, N-di-lower alkyl carbamoyl or cyano, said phenyl-lower alkyl being optionally substituted in the aromatic part by carboxyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl, carbamoyl, N- lower-alkyl carbamoyl or N, N-lower alkyl carbamoyl, R 2 represents hydrogen, lower alkanoyl or benzoyl, or a compound of the formula: wherein R 1 and R 2 have the meanings defined under formula (I), Ar 2 represents a monocyclic or polycyclic carbocyclic radical which contains at least one ring of aromatic character, said monocyclic or polycyclic carbocyclic radical being unsubstituted or substituted as defined under formula (I) and R 3 denotes hydrogen or lower alkyl, or a salt of such compounds, which can be used pharmaceutically, as a beta-receptor-blocking active compound, and L-tryptophan or a non- toxic salt thereof which can be used pharmaceutically. The preparations may be administered orally, rectally or parenterally in the form of tablets, dragÚes, capsules, suppositories and solutions.
