Abstract
For the automatic advancing and retarding of the firing point of the internal combustion engine, the vacuum of an intake line is applied to a "slow" or a "fast" vacuum chamber (28 and 29) of an adjusting device, the diaphragm (30) of which displaces a control element (22), by a control device (32, 61), which in contrast to known ignition timing devices has only a single three-way control valve (32). A venting device (40) connects the vacuum chamber (28 or 29), currently not acted upon by the vacuum, to the atmosphere by way of a venting aperture (47, 50) assigned to the latter and has a second diaphragm (44) with closing element (45) in order to automatically close the other venting aperture (47 or 50). A device (55) responding to temperature automatically interrupts the connection of the three-way control valve (32) to the intake line (11) when the ambient temperature of the engine is below a certain value. In this case both vacuum chambers (28, 29) are vented and both diaphragms (30, 44) and the control element (22) adopt neutral positions so that the firing point assumes an intermediate value. <IMAGE>
