Abstract

1530185 Polyurethane foam compositions COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 21 June 1977 [24 Aug 1976] 35121/76 Heading C3R A foamed composition comprises from 5 to 70% wt. of a tar substance which is a mixture containing not less than 50% wt. of coal tar and which is substantially free from tar acids, e.g. phenols and cresols, and from 30 to 95% wt. of a cured polyurethane. The tar substance may contain an organic solvent which preferably contains substantially no fractions boiling below 200‹ C., e.g. a petroleum or tar-based solvent. The composition may be prepared by mixing a polyol, e.g. a polyether of M.Wt. 310, and a diisocyanate, e.g. diphenylmethane diisocyanate or toluene diisocyanate, in the presence of water as blowing agent, and a tar substance and optionally a catalyst, e.g. an organo tin compound and a cell control agent, e.g. triethanolamine, and foaming the resulting mixture, The products may be rigid or semi-rigid. Uses:- Insulation boards; sealants.
