Abstract

1529678 Web Splicing B S CRONE 22 Dec 1975 [21 Dec 1974] 55333/74 Heading B8R An apparatus for splicing the trailing end of an expiring web to the leading end of a new web comprises a pair of rollers 16, 18 feeding the leading end trimmed by cutters 22 at a plane 20 to dispose the leading edge at a location 26, a pair of feed rollers 42, 421, for feeding the trailing end of the web also trimmed by the cutters 22 to a location 38, and, a pair of splicing rollers 34, 34<SP>1</SP> movable along horizontally aligned paths towards each other to apply adhesive tapes 36, 36<SP>1</SP>, carried by suction segments of the rollers 34, 34<SP>1</SP>, to the trailing end of the web, whereby the roller 34 applies the downstream portion of its tape 36 to the leading end of the web by displacing the leading end against a flexible guide 30. Continued displacement of the rollers towards each other forms a feeding nip and the webs are spliced by setting the rollers 34, 34<SP>1</SP>, in motion. Following splicing the trailing end of the web is released by the clamp formed by a pair of rollers 12, 12<SP>1</SP> and the pairs of rollers 16, 18, and 42, 42<SP>1</SP>, are also disengaged.
