Abstract
1529091 Lignin-modified friction material BENDIX CORP 21 April 1976 [21 April 1975] 16152/75 Heading C3R [Also in Division C4] A friction material, in particular a brake lining, consists of a foundation material for providing internal strength for said friction material, modifier materials for controlling the wear rate, friction and noise of said friction material, and a thermosetting binder comprising a phenolic resin and/or cashew nut powders and an extender selected from a lignosulphonate, kraft lignin and mixtures thereof for establishing a matrix in the presence of heat which holds the foundation material and the modifier materials in a fixed relationship. The kraft lignin may be one modified by reaction with urea or formaldehyde, and the lignosulphonate may have been modified by reaction with formaldehyde. The foundation material may be asbestos, and the modifier materials may comprise organic materials selected from rubber scraps, latex, crude molasses and asphaltic base materials, and inorganic materials selected from carbon, including graphite, barytes, whiting, talc, rotton stone, silica and alumina. The friction material may comprise up to 55% by volume of asbestos, up to 25% by volume of organic modifiers, up to 20% by volume of inorganic modifiers, up to 25% by volume of cashew net powders, up to 35% by volume of thermosetting phenolic formaldehyde resin and up to 30% by volume of said extender.
