Abstract

1528932 Epoxidized polybutadiene and use threeof INSTITUT FRANCAI DUS PETROLE and INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU CAOUTCHOUC 22 Sept 1975 [27 Sept 1974] 38818/75 Headings C3M and C3P ]Also in Division B5] Epoxidized 1,2 - polybutadiene is prepared by reaction of monoperphthalic acid solution on a solution of an amorphous polybutadiene containing at least 50% 1,2-units, having a viscosimetric M.W. above 20,000 and having a crystallinity at 20‹ C. lower than 5%. In examples the reaction is effected in a mixed toluene/ethyl acetate solution. The product may be further reacted or used in a variety of ways, of which the following are illustrated in numbered examples: (12) reaction at epoxy groups with 4 - amino - N,N - diethylaniline; (13) reaction with formic acid followed by saponification to yield a hydroxypolybutadiene; (14) vulcanization with a conventional sulphur-containing system; (15) covulcanization with polychloroprene (nitrile rubber mentioned as alternative); (16) vulcanization by reaction with m-phenylenediamine; and (17-19) use as an adhesive in admixture with m-phenylenediamine or diethylenetriamine as curing agent. For the adhesive applications, the starting 1,2-polybutadiene may be partially degraded prior to epoxidation. e.g. by reaction with dixylylmercaptan.
