Abstract
1528351 Connector STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 18 Dec 1975 [26 Sept 1974] 41968/74 Heading H2E A connector comprises two body parts 13, 17 defining a cavity which contains the electrical contacts 11, 15 pressurized insulant 24 and means 25 for releasing the insulant upon mating for purging the cavity. In an embodiment (Figs. 1 and 2) rings 19 and ring nut 20 secure and seal the two parts together. Conductors 12, 16 enter the cavity defined by the two parts through glands compressed by gland nuts 14, 18 respectively. Upon mating a cutter 25 releases the insulant from capsule 24, which purges the cavity; excess insulant escapes through duct 26 controlled by an adjustable valve 27. The insulant may be air inert gas, oil or plastic mastic and the capsule may contain a diaphragm separating insulant from a pressurized gas or have a plurality of vessels for different substances which upon release, by mixing or reacting together form the insulant. The connector may be used underwater or in an explosive atmosphere.
