Abstract

1528236 Sorting refuse KRAUSS-MAFFEI AG 12 Feb 1976 [5 March 1975] 05579/76 Heading B2H Apparatus for sorting refuse comprises a conveyor belt 2, a plurality of sensors 16 arranged above and below the belt, and a plurality of selection devices 19, 20 and 21 arranged one behind the other along the direction of movement of the belt and controlled in dependence on the identification information provided by the sensors. The row of sensors 16 extends across the whole width of the belt as do the rows of compressed air nozzles 19, 20 and 21. Above the conveyor belt 2 are three further conveyor belts 23, 24 and 25, all the belts having perforations 15 and suction applied to them by pumps 13 and 29. Comminuted paper refuse is fed onto the belt 2 and is moved past the sensors 16. Light from a source 17 is reflected by the paper on the belt and received by a sensor 16 which opens one of the nozzles 19, 20 or 21 according to the colour of the reflected light when the piece of refuse scanned by the sensor is moving over this nozzle. Thus the relevent refuse particle is blown against one of the conveyors 23, 24 or 25, held fast thereon by the vacuum and transported away. In a modification, the conveyors 23, 24 and 25 are below the conveyor 2 and the nozzles 19, 20, 21 are directed downwardly. To separate synthetic plastics from paper, the refuse fed to the hopper 8 is passed through an electrostatic field so that only the plastics becomes charged, the sensors 16 in this case being electrometers.
