667,669. Sorting photo-electrically. OKOLICSANYI, F., and GUNSON (LEEDS), Ltd., R. W. Nov. 21, 1949 [Oct. 20, 1948], No. 27237/48. Class 40 (iii). [Also in Group XXX] Articles to be sorted photo-electrically according to their colour are fed to the viewing position by means of a vibrating table along which the articles pass in a single layer so that as each article falls from the end of the table it is deflected or not, according to its colour, by electro-mechanical or electro-pneumatic mechanism. The articles fall from a hopper 18, Fig. 1, on to the table 19 and are kept to a single layer in height by means of a plate 18a. The table and hopper are supported on blade springs 20, one of which forms or is attached to the armature of an A.C. fed electromagnet 21, so that the articles advance steadily along the vibrating table. The surface of the table is provided with grooves 22, Fig. 2, so that the articles reach the end of the table in a number of single rows. Each groove has associated with it a lamp 30 which illuminates each article leaving the end of the table, and a photo-cell which "looks at " the reflected light from each object. According to the photo-cell output means may be operated to deflect articles from tray 34 directly below the edge of the table to tray 34a. The deflecting means may comprise a solenoid-operated plunger carrying a tongue which projects into the path of the falling article or may be an electrically-controlled air blast. Since the recovery time of the solenoid plunger may be large a number of such plungers may be grouped around the path of the article so that as each is operated it switches in the next so that its tongue may start to move forward before the first one is completely withdrawn. The articles may fall from the table on to a belt moving at right angles to the direction of movement of the table so that the articles form a single line when they leave the belt. The first vibrating table may feed a second one vibrating with a different amplitude and having a baffle above it to reduce the layer of articles to a single thickness. U.S.A.
