Abstract

683,482. Apparatus for placing detonator tubes in carrying plates. STEWART, I F., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 29, 1950 [Dec. 30, 1949], No. 33389/49. Class 9(i) Apparatus for feeding empty detonator tubes into detonator-carrying plates comprises a chain conveyer 1 having chairs 2 in which the plates 3 are seated. Each plate has sockets 4 to receive the tubes 7 from delivery pipes 5, the flow from which is controlled by spring-pressed plungers 8 passing through a beam 10. When electromagnets 11 are energized the beam 10 moves to withdraw the plungers. The delivery pipes are inclined at 10 degrees to the vertical and the bearing surfaces of the chairs 2 are slightly inclined to the horizontal so that an approaching plate 3 does not strike against the lowermost tubes 7 in the pipes. As the plate moves forwards between guides 6 and under the tubes 7, a bevelled corner 17 contacts a detector plunger 15 to operate a switch 16 whereby the electromagnets 11 are energized to withdraw the beam and cause the plungers 8 to slide in bushes 19 and so release the detonator tubes. When the carrying plate passes beyond the pipes, the switchoperating plunger 15 is released and the electromagnets are de-energized, whereupon the springs 12 return the control plungers 8 into engagement with the lowermost tubes 7 in each pipe 5. In a modification, flow control fingers are attached to the beam 10, the bearing surfaces of the chairs 2 are horizontal and the bottoms of the lowermost detonator tubes are supported by the control fingers at a height above the carrying plate 3. As the carrying plates move forwards, the detonator tubes drop into the sockets 4 succeeding tubes, due to their rounded bases and the inclination-of the pipes 5, riding over those tubes already in position to fall into the next line of sockets. Specification 622,527 is referred to.
