Abstract

1,144,779. Shoots; endless conveyers. GUNSON'S SORTEX Ltd. 13 June, 1967 [16 June, 1966], No. 26996/66. Headings B8A and B8S. [Also in Division B2] In a sorting machine objects to be sorted are delivered to a sorting zone 15 by means of a shoot 13, Figs. 1-3, and/or an endless belt 30, Fig. 4, having a surface made of P.T.F.E. The shoot and/or belt is provided with a number of longitudinally extending ribs 24 or 31 so that the surface contact between the shoot and/or belt and the objects is reduced. The objects, e.g. diced potatoes or carrots to be sorted in accordance with their colour, or frozen peas, are delivered from a hopper 10 on to a feed table 11 vibrated by an electromagnetic vibrator 12 and pass down the shoot 13 in substantially single file to enter the zone 15 where they are viewed against a background 17 by photo-sensitive equipment 16. Signals are passed from the latter to a comparator 20 so that when an undesired object is viewed a signal is passed to an ejector 21 which removes the undesired object by a blast of air. The shoot 13, Figs. 2 and 3, which has a funnelshaped portion 22 communicating with a U- shaped channel portion 23 may be made of aluminium and is lined internally with a layer 25 of P.T.F.E. The ribs 24 may be triangular in cross-section. In addition to, or in lieu of, the table 11 there may be provided an endless triangular-ribbed belt 30, Fig. 4, which may be formed of an anti-static elastomeric material and which is provided on its outer surface with a layer of P.T.F.E. Alternatively, the belt is formed entirely of P.T.F.E.
