Abstract

1528111 Automatic circuit breakers MERLIN GERIN 18 Aug 1976 [26 Aug 1975] 34501/76 Heading H1N A current limiting circuit breaker comprises main contacts 12, 14, 22 across which are connected arcing contacts 30, 32, the resistance of the current path through the arcing contacts being greater than that through the main contacts, and one of the main contacts 22 being movable and one of the arcing contacts 30 being movable, these two movable contacts being mechanically interconnected by a link 28, and biased towards their contacts closed positions by a spring 38, the arrangement being such that when excess current flows through the circuit breaker a plunger 56 is released to strike the main movable contact 22 sharply and move it rapidly to open the main contacts, the movable arcing contact 30 moving with the main movable contact but the current path through the arcing contacts being retained because the co-operating arcing contact 32 is displaced by a spring 50 and a first electrodynamic force arising in a loop 44, 46, 48, due to the current through the arcing contacts and moves with the movable arcing contact 30, but after the main contacts 12, 14, 22, have opened the excess current is diverted and passes through the arcing contacts when a second electrodynamic force arises between the conductors 24, 35 leading to the arcing contacts forcing them apart to break the current path. Thus the main and arcing contacts operate sequentially. The loop 44, 46, 48 producing the first electrodynamic force may be fixed, or may be on the movable arcing contact carrier 24, Fig. 2, not shown. The main contacts may be in the form of a rod 22 bridging two fixed contacts 12, 14, or may be a pivoted arm, Fig. 3, not shown.
