Abstract

1526053 Shell and tube vapourizer J E POTTHARST 5 Sept 1975 36709/75 Heading B1B In a vapour compression distillation apparatus liquid (e.g. salt or brackish water) is maintained and heated in the lower end of a tube and shell vapourizer, the upper level of said liquid being above the lower ends of the tubes (e.g. at level 30). Frothy liquid and vapour ascends the tubes and passes laterally across an upper tube plate over an edge and downwardly through passage 19, whereupon the vapour is removed upwardly (e.g. through a demister) to a pump 25. The vapour is there compressed and fed into the shell to heat the tubes and to condense. The condensate is discharged in heat exchange with the incoming feed. The liquid in passage 19 continues downwardly from the ascending vapour and falls back into the liquid at the end of the tubes (i.e. at level 30). The vapourizer may comprise tubes arranged in series.
