Abstract
1525978 Vapour - phase polymerization or a stirred, non-fluidized bed of polymer STANDARD OIL CO 16 Dec 1975 [16 Dec 1974 (3)] 51470/75 Heading C3P The temperature of a vapour-phase polymerization system is controlled by spraying a readily vaporizable quench liquid (which may comprise the monomer in liquefied form) on to a stirred, non-fluidized bed of particulate polymer, the off-gases comprising vapour(s) of the monomer and quench liquid being removed from the horizontal polymerization zone employed. The particulate polymer bed preferably is divided into two or more temperaturecontrollable sections. A reactor for use in the process is shown in Fig. 1, wherein weirs 110, 112, 114 divide the reactor into four sections, each of which is independently controllable in temperature by means of quench liquid introduced via inlets 153, 155, 157 and 159, and wherein vapour (including monomer) is recycled into the reactor via inlets 175, 177, 179, 181 at a rate (controlled by valves 191, 193, 195, 197) such that the particulate bed is not fluidized. The reactor is equipped with a rotating impeller drive shaft 104 (driven by motor 102), which runs the length of the reactor, and whose blades (not shown) serve to slowly turn over the polymer bed without causing it either to be thrown up in large quantities into the overlying gas space, or to migrate along the length of the reactor. In the examples, the monomers polymerized were ethylene and/or propylene, the quench liquids being isopentane or liquified propylene; hydrogen gas and organometallic initiators were also employed.
