Abstract

1523637 Ball mills; magnetic mixing J N KUZNETSOV and V A AMBROSIMOV 11 Dec 1975 50823/75 Headings B1C and B2A A ball mill has magnetically-influenced grinding media, e.g. magnetic elements, and comprises at least one chamber 1 Fig. 1 enveloped by an electric winding 3 which is arranged to produce a variable magnetic field in the chamber. The chamber height is 1.1 to 1.5 of the height of the layer of magnetic elements. Where there are several chambers their total volume is 0.8 to 1.0 of the effective volume of the magnetic field. Material is fed in via a hopper 7 and discharged via a sieve 6. An additional winding 4 and voltage regulator 5 serve as an adjustable magnetic gate altering the height of the media layer. The chamber may be made of rubber and angled to the horizontal and gas e.g. air may be supplied to alter residence time. The grinding media may be spherical or ellipsoidal and of magnetically hard ceramic or metallic materials e.g. barium hexa ferrite, manganese-aluminium, samarium cobalt, ticonal, alnico. Examples of cement, pigment and paint grinding and CO 2 mixing or absorption are described in the latter case the magnetic elements are cylinders coated with polyurethane resin. Various forms of chamber and winding arrangement are shown including a chamber divided by partitions Fig. 6 (not shown) and a plurality of chambers in series Fig. 7 (not shown). In one embodiment the chamber 1 is arranged between two flat annular windings 3' Fig. 4 with the chamber surrounded by the feed bin or hopper 7, the upper winding 3' being protected by a conical member 9.
