Abstract

1522443 Electromagnets O I BUTLER and J F FOULDES 5 April 1977 [28 April 1976] 17143/76 Heading H1P Solenoid actuators may be energized from A.C. supply, charging a capacitor in shunt with a resistance and a neon lamp through a series diode and variable resistor (Fig. 1, not shown) over associated switches. A solenoid actuator comprises (Figs. 2, 3) a coil 1 on a non-magnetic bobbin with ferromagnetic end cheeks 9, 10 surrounded by ferromagnetic casing 11; having an axial bore 2 for a composite armature hvaing a non-magnetic end check 4, a non-magnetic conducting cylindrical section 3, a ferromagnetic cylindrical section 5, and a ferromagnetic end cheek 6; all held together by ferromagnetic rivet 7. Radial gaps 12, 13, 14 are provided in end cheeks 6, 9, 10 and axial gaps in cylindrical parts 5, 8, 11 to minimize induction current loss.
