Abstract

1522315 Modulating light XEROX CORP 3 Oct 1975 [7 Oct 1974 (2)] 40527/75 Heading G2F [Also in Division C4] A nematic liquid crystalline material is homeotropically aligned by placing the nematic liquid crystalline material 30 Fig. 2, in contact with either bis (tri-n-butyltin) oxide or tri-n-butyltin chloride on a substrate 31. The molecules 33 of the liquid crystalline material then align themselves with their major axes normal to the plane of the substrate. The aligning agent, consisting of the bis (tri-nbutyltin) oxide or tri-n-butyltin chloride, may be in the form of a layer or it may be uniformly dispersed in the liquid crystalline material. The liquid crystalline material may be used in an electro-optic cell, the aligning agent extending the lifetime of the cell. In such a cell, the electrodes may be in the form of an image 21, Fig. 9, the liquid crystalline composition filling the void area 20 defined by a spacer 13 separating transparent plates. Alternatively, the spacer may have a cut-out portion 19, Fig. 8, defining the shape of the image and being filled with the liquid crystal composition. Further, the aligning agent may itself be provided as a layer in the shape of the image. In these embodiments, the electric field is applied parallel to the direction on which the major axes of the molecules are aligned, dynamic scattering of the liquid crystalline composition being used. Alternatively, the electric field may be applied in a direction orthogonal to the molecule axes. In a further embodiment, a layer of photo-conductive material such as arsenic triselenide is included between one of the electrodes of the cell and the liquid crystal composition, said photo-conductive material being irradiated with actinic radiation in imagewise configuration. The aligning agent comprises up to 10% and at least 0À1 wt. per cent of the liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal composition may contain an optically active material, which may be either a non-mesomorphic material or a cholesteric liquid crystalline material, examples of such materials being given in the Specification.
