Abstract

1521355 Fluidized bed combustion chambers ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 23 March 1977 [1 April 1976] 13225/76 Heading F1L [Also in Divisions B1 B2 and F4] In a fluidized bed combustion apparatus comprising a pressure vessel 10, an inlet 12 for air to be heated, a support structure 14 including a distributer plate for a bed of inert and combustible material 15, heated particle laden gases leaving the bed flow downwardly through superposed layers 20 of cyclone separators, the clean heated gases leaving the vessel 10 through an outlet duct 18 disposed within the inlet duct 12. The heated gases may be used to drive a turbine and the bed material 15 may comprise particulate coal. As shown each layer 20 comprises a plurality of straight through separators grouped in blocks of six with a single separator in the centre. The outlets of each block of six of the bottom most layer 20 enter a plenum chamber 24 which has an exhaust duct 26 passing through the fluidized bed 15 to a common plenum 28; the centre cyclones are connected to the chamber 28 by an exhaust duct 30.
