Abstract

1519316 Washing railway ballast FRANZ PLASSER BAHNBAUMASCHINEN IN DUSTRIE GmbH 14 Nov 1975 [15 Nov 1974] 47134/75 Heading E1G A method of washing railway track ballast whilst it is being cleaned by a mobile ballast cleaning machine using high pressure water jets comprises moistening the ballast chips whilst they are being picked up and washing the ballast whilst it is moving from the pickup region to a screening system for sieving the ballast. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a chain conveyor 8 having a ballast pickup portion extending across the ballast bed and an inclined trough-like conveyor guide portion 87 adjacent the pickup portion, a vibratory screening system 9 fed by the conveyor 7 and feeding a conveyor 11 which relays the cleaned ballast, wherein in the areas of the pickup portion, the inclined conveyor portion 7, and the screening system are arranged water nozzles 16, 17, 18 connected via pressure line 15 to a pump 14 and a water source, preferably a mobile water tank 6. The nozzles can be adjusted to be directed in the opposite direction to the ballast movement, or at an angle thereto as desired. The nozzles deliver at least two water jets which impinge on the ballast at points separated by a distance corresponding to the average size of a ballast chip. The nozzles may be supplied by water at a high or low pressure. The conveyor 8 is connected to vibratory drive 20, and the dirty water is collected in tanks 21, 22 to be cleaned for re-use.
