Abstract

1518195 Heat-treating flanged shafts AEG-ELOTHERM GmbH 20 Oct 1975 [19 Nov 1974] 42967/75 Heading C7N For inductively heating the fillet region of a rotatably-mounted flanged shaft, a mechanism is provided which ensures that the inductor is a predetermined distance from the fillet. A shaft 1 having a flange 3 and fillet 1A is rotated by motor 6. Inductor 11, 12 which partly surrounds the shaft 1 is attached to an insulating housing 10 mounted on a shaft 9 attached to frame 20 and rod 21 of actuator 24, the housing 10 being movable relative to the shaft 9. When the operation begins, inductor 11, 12 is lowered from its raised rest position, and pistons 32 and 23 are to the left of their respective chambers. A controller 62 activates fluid supply to pipe 27 thus moving the casing 22, and hence the inductor (via rod 33 and housing 10) towards the flange 3. When the inductor contacts the flange, a signal to the controller 62 stops fluidflow to pipe 27 and activates a hydraulic brake 50 to hold the casing 22 in position on the rod 21. Fluid now enters chamber 36 until piston 32 is to the right whereupon heating commences. The resulting distance K between fillet 1A and inductor can be varied by adjustable nuts 40, 41. The heated shaft may be subsequently quenched in a bath.
