Abstract

1454505 Motor operated by expansion and contraction of a fluid J SHEARER 8 Feb 1974 [26 Feb 1973] 9285/73 Heading F1S [Also in Division G1] A heat motor includes an expansion chamber 10, a fluid in the expansion chamber which expands in volume in response to an increase in temperature and decreases in volume in response to a decrease in temperature, means 16 for heating the fluid in the chamber, means 17 for cooling the fluid in the chamber, a second chamber 12 connected to the expansion chamber by a duct 11, and a piston 13 reciprocable within the duct in response to the increase and decrease in volume of the fluid in the expansion chamber, the piston being connected by a piston rod 14 to a second larger piston 15 in the second chamber 12 whereby movement of the piston in the duct causes the larger piston to move. As shown, the second chamber is connected via a non-return valve 18 to an hydraulic motor 21. The shaft 22 of the hydraulic motor also serves as the shaft of a dynamo 23. The means 16 for heating the fluid in the expansion chamber is an electric heating coil and the means 17 for cooling the fluid is a coil containing coolant. In a modification, (not shown), there are four expansion chambers each having a duct 11 leading to a respective chamber 12. Each chamber 12 is connected via a valve to an hydraulic motor.
