Shells; fire-boxes.-The shell of a locomotive type boiler is constructed of two plates which are pressed out to the required form and then joined together at their abutting edges. The dished plates a forming a boiler shell are welded together, the joints being strengthened by riveted butt straps c. The boiler is fitted with a seamless fire-box formed by pressing out a circular plate in three operations; first it is cupped, then it is pressed to a thimble form, and finally it is pressed to the finished form with a flat tube-plate e and a, dome-shaped crown f. In the final operation, the walls forming the tube-plate are thickened.
